In bringing back the Prelude, Honda isn’t just reviving an old nameplate but also reviving an once common but now scarce automotive segment: the premium midsize sports coupe. The first Prelude appeared in 1978, and while Honda offered 2-door versions of the Accord and Civic, the Prelude had its own unique look and feel, establishing it as Honda’s sportiest front-drive two-door coupe. Honda built five generations of the Prelude before phasing it out in favor of SUVs and crossovers, but an all-new 6th-generation Prelude recently returned to Honda’s portfolio – this time with a modern hybrid drivetrain.
The Prelude uses a variation of the Civic hybrid’s powertrain and sits on the Civic platform, but incorporates a number of chassis upgrades from the racy Civic Type R, including that model’s active dampers and dual-axis struts which aim to quell torque steer.
Unlike past Preludes, today’s car doesn’t offer a manual transmission – or, really, a conventional transmission at all. Like many of Honda’s other hybrids, Prelude’s hybrid system uses two motors – one which acts as a generator, and another tasked with turning the front wheels. Around town, the motor drives the wheels and given the torque band of electric motors, this eliminates the need for a transmission. At steady highway speeds, the engine is clutched in to drive the wheels directly. The result is 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque, which is just what the 5th-generation Prelude left with 25 years ago. If desired, an S+ setting simulates acceleration through a transmission. The result is the only hybrid sports coupe on the market, or at least anywhere close to its price range.
This one-of-a-kind status makes comparisons somewhat challenging. Today’s Prelude simply has no hybrid sport-coupe competitors, but we have collected some sporty vehicles that are most likely to be cross-shopped with the Prelude. The other challenge of this comparison is that buying a sports coupe is usually one based on emotional resonance, not necessarily rational evaluation of facts and statistics – but we think there are still some compelling points to consider if you’re thinking a Prelude might be your next new vehicle purchase.

The GR86 is a light front-engine, rear-drive sports car Toyota developed with Subaru, which has its own version called the BRZ. It was mostly seen as a hard-roof competitor to the Mazda MX-5 Miata, sharing the idea that the car must be relatively simple to deliver a direct connection between driver and vehicle. Thus, it avoids the complexity of turbocharging or all-wheel drive to deliver a sports-car experience. It is powered by a Subaru-sourced 2.4-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine producing 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Power is managed by either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. There is a token rear seat that really isn’t expected to seat anyone.

The Subaru BRZ is effectively identical to the Toyota GR86, sharing the same body, interior, and powertrain. As such, unlike almost the rest of the Subaru model line, this model is a rear-wheel drive coupe and does not offer all-wheel drive. The BRZ stands apart from the GR86 in unique exterior styling elements and feature packaging. While much of the comparison content noted above also applies to the BRZ, it is repeated here with minor revisions as applicable.

As a high-performance version of the Elantra 4-door compact sedan, the Elantra N is arguably a much closer competitor to the Civic Type R than is a Prelude rival. The Elantra N is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 producing 286 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic. A 276-hp version of the same engine (with the same torque) is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. In both cases, power is sent to the front wheels. There is little question that the Elantra N is significantly quicker than the Prelude, and the 4-door design and larger cabin will accommodate rear passengers more easily.

Even in the heyday of sports coupes, the Rabbit and Golf GTI offered sports coupe thrills in a practical package. Although the GTI was initially started as a 3-door hatch, the GTI has long since been a 4-door hatchback with a significant fun-to-drive component. It is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, producing 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. With a manual no longer available, the engine is only paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic driving the front wheels. The rear seat can comfortably accommodate adults, and the hatch space is generous.
