The Honda HR-V Is The Most Reliable Used SUV Under $25,000

May 1st, 2026 by

Everyone wants a vehicle that sits higher these days. Crossovers and SUVs offer more interior cargo space and greater overall usability thanks to their hatchbacks rather than trunks. However, larger vehicles can come at a cost, such as suboptimal gas mileage, higher insurance costs, increased tire wear, and poor driving dynamics. The Honda HR-V does not follow those same rules, though, and its price is perfect for all types of buyers.

An Amazing Bargain No Matter the Year

While the 2026 Honda HR-V is an excellent bargain at a starting price of $28,050,* a CarBuzz report found it is the best sub-$25,000 crossover on the used-car market.

Trim Levels and Power

The HR-V debuted in 2016 and was given a full redesign in 2023. It is currently offered in three different trim levels: LX, Sport, and EX-L. The current model has a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. The first-generation model has a 1.8-liter inline-4 that has 141 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque. From 2016 to the present, the HR-V comes standard with front-wheel drive, but every trim level can be optioned with all-wheel drive. Both the 1.8 and current 2.0-liter engines are paired with a CVT, but 2016-2018 FWD models could be optioned with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Fuel Economy

In fuel-economy testing, the EPA estimated the first-gen FWD HR-V at 28 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.** The manual gets 24 city and 34 highway, and the AWD model achieved 27 city and 29 highway.**

What Car and Driver Had to Say

In Car and Driver’s review of the first 2016 HR-V, journalist John Pearley Huffman said, Honda’s build quality is apparent even before opening the driver’s door. The panels all fit tightly on this preproduction test car, the 17-inch wheels look expensive, and there’s no orange peel in the paint.” The rest of the review was mostly about how the interior is perfectly laid out and where the competition that’s been around longer all fall short by comparison.

The HR-V Drove the Competition Out of Business

Speaking of the competition, when the HR-V was first introduced to America, there was a host of vehicles in its class, including the Kia Soul, Nissan Juke, Mazda CX-3, Jeep Renegade, Chevrolet Trax, and the Toyota C-HR. All but the Chevy and the Toyota have since been discontinued. The Toyota is no longer competing against the HR-V, as it’s been turned into an all-electric crossover that starts from nearly $40,000.

Average Maintenance Costs

When it comes to reliability, RepairPal reports that the first-generation HR-V has an average yearly maintenance cost of just $301, or $25 per month. Because the motor features a timing chain, it likely won’t need to be replaced until around 250,000 miles.

The HR-V Can Handle Pretty Much Anything

The 2016-2022 HR-V offers 24.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row of seats and up to 58.8 cubic feet with the seats folded. All-wheel-drive models have 23.2 cu ft. behind the rear seats and 57.6-55.9 cu ft. with the seats folded flat, depending on trim level. For really long items, the front passenger seat of the HR-V can also be folded backward to accommodate items like surfboards, skis, and wood.

Buying A Used Model

Low-mileage examples can be found for under $20,000 with leather seats, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and even all-wheel drive. If you prefer front-wheel drive and don’t mind closer to 60,000-70,000 miles, you can snag a great vehicle for well under $15,000.
