Honda Named Most Fuel-Efficient Automaker By EPA
Honda takes engineering vehicles to the highest standards very seriously. Whether it’s safety, technology, fuel efficiency, or the like, the company is proud not only to offer some of the best vehicles for sale but also to be recognized by experts for doing so. In the latest Automotive Trends Report from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Honda achieved the highest fleet-average fuel economy of all automakers producing a full lineup of gasoline-powered and electrified vehicles in the U.S. auto industry.

While the industry fleet average for all vehicles sold in the U.S. was 27.2 mpg, Honda took the top spot with a fleet average of 31 mpg,* or 3.8 mpg over the average, beating out Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Subaru, Mazda, Volkswagen, Ford, GM, and more. This also coincides with Honda setting new sales records for the CR-V Hybrid, Accord Hybrid, and Civic Hybrid, and with Honda selling more than 400,000 EVs.
Honda Has Helped Owners Get the Best from Their Cars
The EPA’s Automotive Trends Report has been tracking fuel economy every year since 1975, the first year catalytic converters became standard on all vehicles. In that time, while average vehicle horsepower has grown by a whopping 98%, fuel economy has risen by 106%, and CO2 emissions are down by 53%. Interestingly, according to the same report, since 1975, vehicles have only grown in weight by 9%.

Fuel Economy Has Increased Incredibly Since the First Report
During the first report, the average fuel economy was 13.1 miles per gallon. When you compare that to the average 31 mpg* that new Honda vehicles achieve, it’s amazing how far we have come from the days of the first oil crisis to now.

Honda Has Been Leading the Way
Highlighted in the latest report’s infographic is an important date: 1999. That’s the year the first modern hybrid car was released in America, which just so happened to be the Honda Insight. Honda has been a leader in both fuel economy and safety since offering their first car, the N600, in 1967. That car featured a 598cc 2-cylinder engine that produced 46 horsepower. Because of that car, Honda later developed the Civic, which became one of the most important cars in the company’s history, as it was released around the time of the 1973 oil crisis in the United States.
